Products going underground
Tile installations at many of the capital’s Tube stations are “Underground, overground, problem free” after products from Schlüter-Systems, the number one supplier of essential tiling protection, were installed there.
Products from Schlüter were specified as part of a £5bn investment over five years by Transport for London to upgrade more than 50 stations, meaning the famously colourful London Underground map has steadily been turning a shade of orange.
This work has included the installation of substrate preparation products such as Schlüter-DITRA matting, movement joints from the Schlüter-DILEX range, Schlüter-TREP stair-nosing profiles and installation of products in the Schlüter-RONDEC, and Schlüter-QUADEC, Schlüter-SCHIENE and Schlüter-ECK ranges which create not just a decorative finish but also a highly durable one.
Carl Stokes, Divisional Manager at Schlüter-Systems, comments, “The upgrade of many of the London Underground stations as part of a £5bn investment is up there as one of the country’s most high profile projects and we’re very pleased that our products have been specified as part of it. Different stations have seen different requirements, with quarry tiles used in some of the heritage stations and brushed stainless steel used on the underground tunnel platforms
“What keeps products such as Schlüter-DITRA and our Schlüter-DILEX profiles on track at the top of their game is their suitability for areas which experience high levels of mechanical stress. With over three and a half million journeys each weekday, rising to four million on the busiest days, there is no greater test of our products’ suitability for areas of high footfall than here.”
He continued, “The architects specifying for this project would have known the importance of selecting products which could not only be installed quickly and correctly at the first time of asking but also perform to the very highest level. The last thing passengers want is disruption and inconvenience caused by failed tile installations so we’re delighted that the specification of our products therefore acts as another glowing endorsement of their many qualities.”
Schlüter-DITRA matting is the world’s leading uncoupling membrane which neutralises cracks and prevents movements from the screed being transferred to the tiled surface. Movement joints from the Schlüter-DILEX range have provided the perfection solution for secure edge protection and maintenance free solutions for surfaces exposed to continuous vehicular and heavy foot traffic such as in shopping centres and airports whilst Schlüter-TREP stair-nosing profiles are perfect for safe, slip-resistant stair edges.
Schlüter-Systems’ range of tile trim profiles are designed to provide a decorative finish and protect exposed tile edges for wall corners, skirtings and floors. Schlüter-RONDEC, Schlüter-QUADEC, Schlüter-SCHIENE and Schlüter-ECK help create not just a decorative finish but also a highly durable one, leaving the perfect installation.
